Il \u00e9tudie ensuite a\u0300 la Skowhegan School of Painting &amp; Sculpture (Maine), avant de s\u2019installer a\u0300 New York en 1981.<\/span><\/p><p lang=\"fr-FR\" class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Ce n\u2019est qu\u2019au milieu des ann\u00e9es 90, apr\u00e8s avoir expos\u00e9 \u00e0 New York et a\u0300 Paris, qu\u2019il obtient une premi\u00e8re reconnaissance internationale pour ses sculptures biomorphiques, faussement ludiques, r\u00e9alis\u00e9es en r\u00e9sine de polyester. En 2004, il est r\u00e9sident a\u0300 l\u2019Atelier Calder a\u0300 Sache\u0301. Cette exp\u00e9rience sera d\u00e9terminante dans l\u2019\u00e9volution de son \u0153uvre. Soriano commence alors a\u0300 r\u00e9aliser des sculptures murales compos\u00e9es de c\u00e2bles d\u2019acier tendus et de tuyaux m\u00e9talliques. Il introduit ensuite de la peinture a\u0300 la bombe, appliqu\u00e9e directement sur les murs, en d\u00e9veloppant tout un v\u00e9ritable langage de signes. Ses \u0153uvres deviennent de plus en plus bidimensionnelles jusqu\u2019a\u0300 ce qu\u2019en 2012, il d\u00e9cide d\u2019\u00e9liminer compl\u00e8tement les \u00e9l\u00e9ments en volume pour ne conserver que la peinture \u00e0 la bombe. Aujourd\u2019hui, ses \u0153uvres consistent exclusivement en des fresques murales de grande \u00e9chelle, r\u00e9alis\u00e9es a\u0300 l\u2019acrylique et a\u0300 la bombe, auxquelles s\u2019ajoutent quelques \u0153uvres sur papier.<\/span><\/p><p lang=\"fr-FR\" class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Depuis 2018, ses travaux portent principalement sur les profonds changements climatiques et \u00e9cologiques qui affectent la plan\u00e8te, avec un focus initial sur la neige, les glaciers, et les icebergs. En 2021, Soriano s\u2019est rendu dans la ville c\u00f4ti\u00e8re d\u2019Ilulissat au Groenland, o\u00f9 il a longuement observ\u00e9 les icebergs qui entourent le glacier Sermeq Kujalleq. Jour apr\u00e8s jour, perch\u00e9 sur les hauteurs et le rivage de la Baie de Disko, il a observ\u00e9 et reproduit ces g\u00e9ants de glace qui, tour \u00e0 tour, d\u00e9rivent, entrent en collision, ou s\u2019effondrent. De l\u00e0 est n\u00e9e une s\u00e9rie de dessins, mais aussi et surtout une fresque murale de 11 m\u00e8tres de long, qui a int\u00e9gr\u00e9 l\u2019exposition \u00ab\u00a0Down North\u00a0\u00bb et a \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e dans trois mus\u00e9es : le Portland Art Museum (Maine, \u00c9tats-Unis), le Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Art de Reykjavik (Islande), ainsi que le Bildmuseet de Ume\u00e5 (Su\u00e8de). Cette s\u00e9rie d\u2019\u0153uvres venue du Grand Nord fait l\u2019objet d\u2019un livre en lithographie, \u00e9dit\u00e9 par l\u2019Atelier Michael Woolworth.<\/span><\/p><p lang=\"fr-FR\" sculpteur qui s&rsquo;est tourn\u00e9 presque exclusivement vers le dessin ces derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es. Pourtant, m\u00eame aujourd&rsquo;hui, il conserve l&rsquo;\u0153il distinct d&rsquo;un sculpteur. Ses fresques murales et ses \u0153uvres sur papier donnent vie \u00e0 un processus d&rsquo;observation et de documentation intense, presque scientifique, dont il se sert pour capturer l\u2019instabilit\u00e9 des propri\u00e9t\u00e9s physiques du monde qui l&rsquo;entoure. La derni\u00e8re fresque murale en date de Soriano, Ilulissat, Disko Bugt, fait partie d&rsquo;un vaste projet illustrant la rapidit\u00e9 de l\u2019\u00e9volution de notre environnement naturel, et mettant en sc\u00e8ne la neige, les glaciers et les icebergs. Le projet a d\u00e9but\u00e9 en 2018 lorsque l\u2019artiste s\u2019est lanc\u00e9, \u00e0 intervalles r\u00e9guliers sur une p\u00e9riode de deux semaines, dans la mesure, l\u2019enregistrement et le suivi d\u2019un tas de neige en train de fondre, dans son jardin \u00e0 Penobscot. Cette observation initiale sans pr\u00e9tention a finalement conduit l&rsquo;artiste au Groenland, \u00e0 la ville d&rsquo;Ilulissat, o\u00f9 il a con\u00e7u, en 2021, une s\u00e9rie d\u2019\u0153uvres inspir\u00e9es par les icebergs v\u00eal\u00e9s du glacier Sermeq Kujalleq. L\u2019ouvrage sera expos\u00e9, sous une forme inachev\u00e9e, \u00e0 la Galerie du Haut-Pav\u00e9, d\u00e8s le d\u00e9but du mois d&rsquo;avril.<\/span><\/p><p><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Peter Soriano<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #333333;\">(b. 1959) is a sculptor who, in recent years, has turned his practice almost exclusively to drawing. Yet even now, he retains the distinct eye of a sculptor. His wall drawings and works on paper bring to life an intense, almost scientific process of observation and documentation that he uses to capture the unstable physical properties of the world around him. Soriano&rsquo;s most recent wall drawing Ilulissat, Disko Bugt is part of an on-going project that documents our rapidly changing natural environment that focuses on snow, glaciers, and icebergs. The project began in 2018 when, at intervals over a period of two weeks, the artist measured, recorded, and traced a melting pile of snow in his backyard in Penobscot. That simple initial investigation eventually led the artist to the town of Ilulissat, Greenland, where, in 2021, he conceived a series of drawings inspired by icebergs calved from the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier. Day after day, perched on the hillsides and shore of Disko Bay, in the North Atlantic, Soriano watched and sketched the icebergs as they drifted by, collided, or collapsed. The outcome is a group of intimate ink drawings on paper as well as the large, site-specific Ilulissat, Disko Bugt, a schematized wall drawing whose choppy, even erratic lines echo the impermanence of icebergs. Based on a conjunction of geometry, free-line drawing, color, and texture, Ilulissat, Disko Bugt presents not only one man\u2019s attempt to capture a fleeting moment of a passing iceberg at sea but is situated within a larger, disconcerting conversation about the impact of climate change and the instability of the planet we live on.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: small; color: #333333;\">Using the same drawings made in Ilulissat he is currently working on a limited edition artist book at the Atelier Michael Woolworth.
